SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team defeated IUP on Saturday afternoon, 9-1, behind a hat trick from senior
Madison Scarr and a four-point effort from freshman
Caitlyn Wink in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (11-2, 6-0 PSAC) blitzed IUP (5-9, 2-5) with five goals in the first half, three of which came in the first 20 minutes of play.
Â
The nine goals for SU is the most goals scored in a game since 2011, when the Raiders shut out Southern Connecticut State, 12-0, in a non-conference matchup.
Â
Senior
Emily Barnard opened the scoring just 29 seconds in, finishing off her own rebound to put the Raiders ahead 1-0. Ten minutes later, senior
Kylie Huffman gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead scoring off a corner taken by Wink. Senior
Brooke Sheibley was also credited with an assist on Huffman's goal.
Â
Senior
Mary Spisak found the back of the net in the 18th minute, scoring off a rebound after her initial shot was stopped by IUP defensemen Madison Youst.
Â
Wink would tally her first goal of the season five minutes remaining in the first half after converting her penalty stroke attempt that beat IUP goalkeeper Alyssa Lerda to her right. Barnard would cap off SU's five-goal first half with her 15th goal of the year in the 32nd minute off assists from both Huffman and Wink.
Â
After the break, Scarr would give SU a 6-0 lead in the 45th minute after finishing off a cross from senior
Lauren Zengulis on an odd-man rush. Scarr would pot her second goal of the game just two minutes later off a pass from senior
Mary Spisak.
Â
After IUP got on the board in the 55th minute, SU wasted no time in getting it back, responding with a goal one minute later off the stick of Scarr to complete her hat trick. The ninth and final goal came from Zengulis in the 66th minute, her first of the season.
Â
In total, five Raiders recorded multi-point days including Barnard, Scarr and Wink all recording at least three points.
Â
Redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Ally Mooney notched her 11th win of the year, making two saves on the afternoon. Fellow redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Catherine Matuszko relieved Mooney in the 55th minute and recorded three saves in the game.
Â
Shippensburg will return to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. when it hosts Seton Hill in a PSAC matchup from Robb Sports Complex.Â
