Volleyball Returns Home With PSAC Sweep of Slippery Rock, 3-0

SU gets double-double from Goerl, totals nine team blocks

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior Annie Goerl compiled a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs on Friday night, hitting .333, to help propel the Shippensburg University volleyball team to a straight-set victory over Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Heiges Field House.
 
Shippensburg (13-2, 2-1 PSAC) defeated Slippery Rock (8-8, 1-2) by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-10.
 
The Raiders totaled nine team blocks, with freshman Kendall Johnson playing a part in two solo blocks and three block assists. Goerl, sophomore Morgan DeFloria and freshman Samantha Webber each had three block assists on the night as well.
 
Webber had nine kills and hit .280, while DeFloria ripped eight kills. Freshman Gabriella Johnson had seven kills and 11 digs while hitting .185.
 
Senior Maura Nolan provided another sturdy all-around effort with 35 assists, 15 digs two kills and two block assists. From the back row, senior Maria Peluso totaled a match-high 20 digs.
 
Slippery Rock was limited to a .044 hitting percentage as a team, totaling 24 attack errors to SU's 15. The visitors got eight kills each from Leah Jones and Beth Stumpf.
 
After a close first set, the two teams were even for much of the second set as well, reaching a 21-21 score in the middle frame. SU then reeled off three straight points before The Rock staved off two set points. A Goerl kill concluded the second frame in SU's favor.
 
The Raiders got a nine-point service run from senior Brittany Whitacre, building a 20-6 advantage before ultimately closing out the straight-set victory.
 
Shippensburg has a showdown with Edinboro at 1 p.m. Saturday from Heiges Field House. The two teams have gone to five sets in six straight meetings, including last year's PSAC Semifinals, and in 10 of the last 12 meetings overall dating back to 2005.
