SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 3 Shippensburg University field hockey team stifled visiting IUP on Wednesday, posting a 2-0 shutout victory over the visiting Crimson Hawks in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (9-1, 2-0 PSAC) used goals from sophomore
Noelle Kephart and sophomore
Brooke Zeiders to collect its fourth straight victory and ninth overall this season.
IUP (4-4, 0-2) was not able to crack the Raider defense. The Crimson Hawks worked two penalty corners in the second half and managed some runs into the SU backfield, but could not find the net.
Shippensburg's defense remains the top-ranked unit in NCAA Division II for fewest goals allowed, goals-against-average and shutouts. SU has allowed just two goals through 10 games and achieved eight shutouts.
As for Wednesday's scoring, Kephart registered her sixth goal of the season with just less than two minutes remaining before halftime. She received a pass from outside the box from junior
Kylie Huffman and sent a shot into the lower-right section of the goal.
Zeiders scored a pretty goal with less than three minutes remaining to ice the game. With her back turned to the goal, Zeiders took a pass from junior
Rajchel Moore and sent it "backwards-stick" into the goal for her second tally of the year.
Shippensburg returns to action at 6 p.m. Saturday with a PSAC match at Mansfield.
