SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team scored eight minutes into Wednesday's home match with Kutztown and held first-half momentum, but the Raiders could not ultimately stave off the Golden Bears in a 2-1, double-overtime loss on a muggy afternoon at David See Field.
Shippensburg (5-3, 3-3 PSAC) struck just 7:53 into the contest, as junior
Bailey Bzdak took possession of a backwards scoop from junior
Mallory Patterson and snuck a shot into the lower-left corner of the net.
The Raiders put on a blitz within the first 10 minutes, totaling seven shots and three corner kicks. Overall, SU out-shot the visitors 14-7 in the first half and held a 5-0 margin in corners at halftime.
Kutztown (5-2, 4-2 PSAC) countered, however, and put on a surge of its own down the stretch. The Golden Bears posted a 17-4 advantage shots after halftime, and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. The visitors tied the score in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on a far-side rush with a shot into an open goal.
Redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Leah Roy was sensational in net for the Raiders, as she came up with several diving and point-blank saves over the course of the game. Roy finished with a career-high 14 saves, marking the most by a Raider keeper since Shelbie Rackley made 15 saves at Kutztown on Sept. 5, 2012.
The deciding tally came less than three minutes into the second overtime, as KU forward Alaina Curry took advantage of a turnover and rifled home a shot into the lower-left corner from the top of the box.
Shippensburg will look to rebound at 4 p.m. Saturday when it hosts No. 12 West Chester from David See Field.
