Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Cal to Begin 2016 Season, 2-0

SU gets its first win over the Vulcans since 2009

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team scored a goal in each half on a sunny Thursday to shut out California, 2-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at David See Field to begin the 2016 season.

Shippensburg (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) out-shot California (0-1, 0-0) by a 26-4 margin and pumped 12 shots on goal in recording the team's first victory over the Vulcans since the 2009 season. SU allowed just one total shot in the second half and achieved an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Tori Mills opened the scoring less than three minutes before halftime, as she put a deft touch into the goal off a nice assist from freshman Paige Harris.

SU scored a beautiful goal in the 60th minute to augment its advantage. Off a corner kick from senior Stephanie Allshouse, junior Kat Hartner converted a slick header into the goal to put the Raiders up 2-0.

Junior goalkeeper Leah Roy was not tested much, but made a huge save in the second half to ultimately preserve the shutout. In the 78th minute, Cal's Luisa Holzapfel took advantage of an SU defensive gaffe and had a short breakaway, but Roy made the stop with her legs and Allshouse came back to clear away the rebound.

Roy finished with two saves to achieve her sixth career shutout.

Shippensburg begins its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule at 1 p.m. on Saturday at nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg.
