SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team got goals from three different seniors on Thursday night as the Raiders posted a decisive 3-0 victory over regional rival Shepherd in the 2016 season opener from David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-0) out-shot Shepherd (24-4) by a 24-4 margin and earned five corner kicks in the second half – controlling the territorial edge for much of the contest. The visitors managed just two shots on goal in the contest and were prevented from mustering a significant scoring chance.
The Raiders got on the board in the 23rd minute when senior
Collin McConnell caged his fourth career goal by ripping a volley from the box off a nifty entry feed from red-shirt freshman
Isiah Dorsey.
In the second half, senior
Tyler Whitehead scored the second goal of his career by standing on the far side of the box and heading home a long throw-in from senior
Colten Arnold.
With less than four minutes to play, Arnold cemented the victory with a rip in a crowded box after another splendid pass from Dorsey.
Redshirt-freshman
Garret Watson made two saves in his collegiate debut for the shutout victory.
Shippensburg begins its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at East Stroudsburg.
