Katelyn Grazan scored a golden goal two minutes into overtime Thursday to help the Shippensburg University field hockey team defeat Messiah, 1-0, in the 2016 season opener.
Shippensburg (1-0) wasted little time in scoring in overtime as Grazan converted after receiving a pass from junior
Emily Barnard. Grazan dribbled around the defender to bury the golden goal past Messiah (0-1) goalkeeper Shelby Landes and give the Raiders the victory.
It is the second consecutive year Shippensburg has played Messiah. Last year, the Raiders also defeated Messiah in a 1-0 overtime victory. Grazan assisted on the game-winning goal in that contest.
Offensive chances were at a premium; with the Raiders recording six shots on goal while the Falcons totaled just six shots, none of which were on goal against sophomore
Ally Mooney.
Shippensburg recorded seven penalty corners while Messiah registered six.
Shippensburg will return to action Saturday against Southern Connecticut State in the Dr. Art DeGenaro Classic hosted by Mansfield University.
