SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Wilmington (Del.) on Monday, winning the opener 1-0 on a walk-off single by freshman
Megan Hevey before falling 6-0 to the Wildcats on a gorgeous afternoon at Robb Field.
Â
Shippensburg (16-23) received an excellent pitching effort in Game 1 from freshman
Taryn Wilson, who gave up just three hits without a walk and struck out six in an 85-pitch complete game. Wilson notched her first career shutout with the victory, and she has now allowed just five earned runs in 27.2 innings (1.27 ERA) since returning from injury on April 10.
Â
In the decisive seventh, sophomore
Eryn Caragein hit a sharp single to right field that evaded the right fielder, allowing her to reach second base. After a sacrifice bunt by senior
Briana Giovenco, followed by a strikeout, Hevey got enough of a 1-0 pitch to sneak a single past the out-stretched second baseman for the walk-off victory.
Â
Wilmington (27-19) got nine hits in Game 2 to nab the doubleheader split, as the Wildcats led 3-0 through six innings before adding three insurance runs in the seventh. SU managed just two hits, while sophomore
Chloe Collins threw a complete game in the circle. Collins gave up four earned runs, walked two, and struck out four over 94 pitches.
Â
At the plate, Collins had three hits on the day – including an opposite-field double in Game 1. Freshman
Maddie Schafer returned to her catcher position in Game 2, blooping a single into left field and throwing a runner on an attempted steal. Giovenco also had a double on the day.

Shippensburg travels to West Chester at 2:30 p.m. Friday for a PSAC East doubleheader with the Golden Rams.
