SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team split a Friday Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on "MS Awareness Day" at Robb Field, as visiting Millersville won the opener 2-0 before the home-standing Raiders won the nightcap 7-6.
Shippensburg (15-22, 3-9 PSAC East) got a great day in the circle from freshman
Taryn Wilson, who threw a complete game in the opener and earned a relief win in Game 2 with 3.2 innings of one-run ball. On the day, Wilson struck out 11 in 10.2 innings of work and walked just two.
Millersville (20-14, 7-5) capitalized on Wilson's lone mistake in the opener, launching a mammoth two-run home run for Game 1's only scoring. SU had plenty of chances to score but left seven runners on base. Sophomores
Tara Bicko and
Anna Warfield each had a double off Millersville's Brianna Andraos, who achieved her 23rd career shutout in the win.
The Raiders pounced on Game 2 starter Cassidy Pinchorski, chasing her seven batters into the nightcap. SU's six-run frame included a solo home run from Warfield, a bases-loaded walk by sophomore
Eryn Caragein and a two-run single by sophomore
Maddie Mulhall off Pinchorski. After Andraos re-entered, SU added runs on an RBI-groundout by sophomore
Taylor Dorman and an RBI-single by Bicko.
Sophomore
Chloe Collins lasted just two innings as she was forced to leave the game with an injury during her plate appearance in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman
Nicole Smith relieved but was pulled in the fourth after yielding three consecutive hits following a leadoff groundout. Wilson struck out four in her 3.2 innings of relief, yielding the lone run in the seventh.
Freshman
Megan Hevey had an RBI-single in the third inning that proved to be a valuable cushion run for the Raiders. Senior
Taylor Pattillo drew three walks on the day and now has 16 this season; she has now reached base in 15 straight games. Caragein reached base four times, totaling two hits and walking twice.
Shippensburg was eliminated from PSAC playoff competition with Friday's split. The three Eastern Division representatives in the PSAC Tournament will be West Chester, Kutztown and Millersville. SU can at best tie both Kutztown and Millersville in the standings with four games still to play, but both the Golden Bears and Marauders have tiebreakers over the Raiders by virtue of winning each season series.
As part of its "MS Awareness Day" on Friday, SU held a special pre-game ceremony in which both Giovenco and Pattillo educated those assembled on the impact of multiple sclerosis, a disease that affects more than 2.5 million people worldwide. Kim Mullan, the wife of SU assistant coach
Jim Mullan and the mother of Jill Mullan '11, threw a ceremonial first pitch.
Shippensburg hosts Wilmington (Del.) at 2:30 p.m. Monday in a non-conference doubleheader at Robb Field. It will be SU's sixth home doubleheader in a 10-day span.
