Softball Comes Up Short in Road Doubleheader Thursday at Millersville

SU drops scores of 7-0, 4-3 to the Marauders in a conference twinbill

The Shippensburg University softball team dropped a pair of games Thursday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Millersville, falling to the Marauders by scores of 7-0 and 4-3 from the MU Softball Field.

Shippensburg (9-16, 0-4 PSAC East) and Millersville (17-11, 4-2) were 0-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 1, but the Marauders scored seven times in their final at-bat. The Raiders were credited with three errors in the inning, resulting in multiple unearned runs, as Millersville collected four hits in the inning plus a bases-loaded walk.

In Game 2, SU out-hit Millersville 10-7 but left nine runners on base. Both teams scored a run in the second inning, but the Marauders built a lead after scoring three runs with two outs in the fourth inning. SU rallied with two runs in the seventh and got the tying run to third base, but could not get the equalizer.

Sophomore Chloe Collins had three hits on the day and an RBI-groundout in SU's seventh-inning rally in Game 2. Sophomore Eryn Caragein also had an RBI-single in the rally and also drew two walks on the day.

Senior Briana Giovenco and sophomore Tara Bicko each had a single and double between the two games. Freshman Maddie Schafer had an RBI-double in Game 2.

Freshman Emily Gigliotti was 2-for-2 with a double, walk and run scored as the starting first baseman in Game 2.

Both SU pitchers threw complete games. Collins allowed four earned runs on eight hits in the opener with two walks and five strikeouts. Freshman Taryn Wilson yielded four earned runs on seven hits in Game 2 with two walks and three strikeouts. The pitchers only yielded three extra-base hits on the day – all doubles by Millersville leadoff hitter Heather Lutz.

Shippensburg is back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday at East Stroudsburg.
