SU hits .422 as a team, cranking out 27 hits, to grab its first two divisional wins

The Shippensburg University softball team scored 19 runs and cranked out 27 hits on Saturday to win both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at East Stroudsburg by scores of 9-7 and 10-6 at Zimbar Field.

Shippensburg (11-16, 2-4 PSAC East) picked up its first two divisional victories of the season with an offensive display that included at least one run in eight of its 14 innings at the plate on Saturday. Every Raider starter had at least one hit, while seven different players contributed at least one RBI.

Senior Taylor Pattillo hit a home run in both games of the doubleheader, bringing her season total to six. Pattillo was 4-for-7 on the day with six RBIs, a four runs and a stolen base in addition to the two round-trippers.

Sophomore Anna Warfield was 6-for-8 overall with four RBIs and a run scored. Fellow sophomore Tara Bicko had five hits, including a double, to go along with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Eryn Caragein had three hits, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

Freshman Nicole Smith won both games of the doubleheader for her first collegiate victories. Smith threw 2.2 shutout innings of relief in Game 1, allowing just one hit. In Game 2, Smith allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits in six innings.

Sophomore Chloe Collins had a single, triple, sacrifice fly, three RBIs and four runs scored on the day. Collins also started Game 1 from the circle and pitched 5.1 innings on the day, striking out four batters.

Freshman Maddie Schafer had two hits, including an RBI-double, while sophomore Maddie Mulhall delivered a two-run single.

In Game 1, SU held leads of 2-0, 5-2 and 6-4 but trailed 7-6 through five innings. The Raiders tied it in the sixth on an RBI-single by Warfield and won it with two runs in the top of the seventh on RBI-singles by Pattillo and Caragein. Smith allowed a leadoff triple in the bottom of the seventh but induced three straight groundouts to end the game.

Game 2 featured Shippensburg trailing 2-0 through two innings before exploding for six runs in the third – four of which came with two outs. SU added three more in the fourth on an RBI-triple by Collins and a two-run homer by Pattillo.

Shippensburg will have its long-awaited home opener on Wednesday when it hosts Shepherd for a non-conference doubleheader at Robb Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. SU will have three home doubleheaders in four days next week, as the Raiders host Kutztown on Friday and West Chester on Saturday for divisional twinbills.
