Softball Drops Pair of One-Run Games at Kutztown, 3-2 and 4-3

Collins throws well in Game 1, homers in Game 2

The Shippensburg University softball team dropped a tough pair of games Friday in a doubleheader at Kutztown, 3-2 and 4-3, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at North Campus Field.

Shippensburg (9-14, 0-2 PSAC East) had not played for 12 days entering Friday's twinbill, and fell behind 3-0 after four innings in the first game. However, the Raiders took advantage of two Kutztown errors in the sixth inning to score a pair of unearned runs. Unfortunately for SU, it went in order in the seventh to fall by a run.

In Game 2, both teams scored in the first inning as senior Taylor Pattillo singled up the middle to score sophomore Macy Luck for SU.

The game remained tied into the fourth inning when sophomore Chloe Collins unloaded her first home run of the season – a two-run shot to left – to put SU up 3-1.

However, the Golden Bears scored two runs in the fifth to tie the game before scoring the eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Nicki Mann.

The Raiders received a pair of solid pitching performances Friday as Collins allowed just two earned runs in six innings of work in Game 1. In the nightcap, freshman Taryn Wilson scattered 11 hits, allowing just two earned runs while striking out three in six innings.

SU pitching did not walk a batter in 12 innings of work Friday.

Sophomore Tara Bicko led SU with four hits as she went 4-for-8 with a double in two games in the leadoff spot of the order. Collins and Luck were the other Raiders to have multiple hits Friday as each finished with two knocks.

The Raiders will have another week off before traveling to Millersville next Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
