Men’s Basketball Battles but Drops Heartbreaker at Kutztown, 81-78

SU gets 26 from Sleva and a career-high 23 from Antonio Kellem

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Shippensburg men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with Kutztown on Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division battle, but the Raiders could not maintain a late lead in an 81-78 loss to the Golden Bears from Keystone Arena.

In a game that featured six ties and 15 lead changes, it was Shippensburg (14-8, 11-7 PSAC) who trailed 60-49 with 13:25 left in regulation. Sophomore Dustin Sleva then proceeded to score 11 consecutive points, draining all three of SU's second-half three pointers during the run, to tie the score at 60-60 with 11:17 to go.

The run proved to be a 15-0 stretch for the Raiders, as Shippensburg later went on a 6-0 run to lead 78-71 with 2:04 to go.

Kutztown (17-4, 14-3), however, closed the contest on a 10-0 run, getting a pair of three-pointers from Ryan Connolly and forcing a pair of SU turnovers to steal the game at the end.

The Golden Bears, who shot 31 percent from the field in a loss to SU earlier this season, finished Saturday with a 50-percent line. Josh Johnson, who led KU with 21 points, made the go-ahead lay-up with 14 seconds to go.

Sleva was other-worldly at stretches during the second half and finished with his conference-leading 14th double-double: 26 points and 13 rebounds. He was 9-of-13 from the field, 3-of-5 from three-point range and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line.

Freshman Antonio Kellem had his best offensive game to date as a Raider and was sensational on Saturday. He finished with a career-high 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting, including a three-pointer, and a 2-of-2 trip to the free-throw line. Kellem tied a career high with four assists, grabbed four rebounds, and had two steals in 35 minutes.

Junior Abe Massaley had 10 assists for the second straight game and had three steals while committing just three turnovers, but the SU point guard managed just four points on the day. Sophomore Justin McCarthur had seven points off the bench, while senior David Craig contributed six points and three rebounds as a reserve.

SU's defense was strong in the second half, limiting the Golden Bears to 39-percent shooting in the final 20 minutes after the home team connected at a 62-percent rate in the first half. Both teams finished with seven three-pointers.

Shippensburg hosts Millersville at 8 p.m. Wednesday from Heiges Field House. Wednesday is 'Play 4 Kay' night at SU; with giveaways for all fans in attendance and free admission for all those who wear pink to the games. More information about SU's 'Play 4 Kay' festivities are available at shipraiders.com/play4kay.
