SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team shared the basketball generously Wednesday in an 87-70 win over Millersville in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game on "Play 4 Kay" night at Heiges Field House. Shippensburg (15-8, 12-7 PSAC) distributed 20 assists in the victory, helping the team shoot 45.3 percent (29-64) from the field. The Raiders made 10 three-pointers, marking the fourth time this season SU has made double-digit buckets from beyond the arc.
Sophomore
Dustin Sleva put together a healthy stat line, totaling 24 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Sleva continues to lead the PSAC, and is among the Top 5 in all of Division II, in double-doubles with 15.
Freshman
Antonio Kellem built off his big game Saturday by tying his career high with 23 points. Kellem, who also scored 23 at Kutztown four days ago, made 9-of-12 field goal attempts Wednesday, including 5-of-6 from three-point range. The sharp-shooting freshman has made 19 of his last 23 field goal attempts in SU's last two games.
The Raiders received strong contributions off the bench as well as sophomore
Justin McCarthur scored 11 points and issued three assists. Sophomore
Clay Conner made 7-of-8 free throw attempts on his way to 10 points and a team-high six assists.
SU took an early 15-5 lead, but Millersville slowly worked its way back into the game and trailed the Raiders by just two with 2:20 remaining in the first half. However, SU held Millersville scoreless for the remainder of the half and used a pair of three-pointers by Kellem to take an eight-point lead into the half.
Millersville (3-19, 3-15) battled, coming as close as four points in the second half, but Shippensburg used a 10-0 run spanning less than two minutes in the middle of the second half to pull away. The Raiders led by as many as 20 following back-to-back three-pointers by McCarthur and a free throw by Sleva with under two minutes to go.
Wednesday's game was held in conjunction with the national "Play 4 Kay" initiative of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund — with the purpose of increasing breast cancer awareness and raising funds for research.
The WBCA Pink Zone was rebranded a few years ago as Play4Kay. The mission of the initiative, which was brought to life in 2007, remains intact: a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is the official charity of the initiative.
Shippensburg will try for a fourth win in five games Saturday when it travels to Cheyney for a 3 p.m. start from Cope Hall.
