Women’s Basketball Rides Hot Shooting to Win Over Mansfield, 85-66

SU shoots 63.3 percent in first half; distances itself with big second quarter

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team found its offensive groove Wednesday as it defeated Mansfield, 85-66, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (17-4, 13-4 PSAC), the second-highest scoring offense in the PSAC, broke out with a 49-point first half in which the Raiders shot 63.3 percent (19-of-30) from the field. SU led by 19 points at the break and by as many as 31 following a 16-4 run to start the second half.

SU was led by junior Colleen Young's career-high 24 points on an efficient 11-of-13 shooting from the field. Junior Morgan Griffith was also brilliant, recording her PSAC-best 12th double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Junior Lauren Gold ran the show superbly for SU, scoring six points and dishing out a career-high 12 assists. The junior point guard now has three career double-digit assist games. The Raiders assisted on 19 of 30 buckets as a team Wednesday.

The Raiders led by one after a quarter, and began distancing itself in the second quarter by outscoring Mansfield 22-8 in the frame. SU limited the Mounties to 37.9 percent shooting in the first half.

The Raiders were fantastic in transition Monday, repeatedly getting easy shots and drawing fouls from outrunning the Mounties. SU scored 27 points off Mansfield's 19 turnovers while making 19-of-30 free throws.

Junior Logan Snyder scored 14 points, dished out three assists and grabbed a pair of rebounds. Sophomore Kristin McGeough again provided big minutes off the SU bench, scoring nine points to go along with three rebounds, two blocks and a career-high three steals.

Every SU player on the roster appeared in the game and nine different Raiders scored. The Raiders have won back-to-back games, maintaining their position atop the PSAC Eastern Division.

Also with the win, SU has clinched a PSAC playoff spot.

The Raiders travel to Kutztown Saturday to take on the Golden Bears. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. from Keystone Arena.
