SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter Wednesday to come back and defeat Lock Haven, 64-55, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (19-6, 15-6 PSAC) outscored Lock Haven, 21-11, in the fourth quarter to pull away. The Raiders shot 50 percent from the field and made 10-of-13 free throws in the final 10 minutes.
Ten seconds into the fourth quarter, junior
Colleen Young hit a three-pointer from the left wing to give SU a lead it would not relinquish. The Raiders began the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run behind junior
Morgan Griffith, who scored six consecutive SU points at one point and eight in the frame.
Griffith finished with her 14th double-double of the season as she led SU with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Young scored 18 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting from the field and five makes in seven attempts from the free throw line.
The Raiders struggled from the field for much of the night, shooting 34.9 percent from the field. However, the SU defense forced 22 Lock Haven turnovers on the night, which translated to 19 Raider points. Meanwhile, the Raiders turned it over just eight times, leading to only five points for LHU.
In two games against Lock Haven this season, the Raiders forced 46 turnovers by the Bald Eagles.
Junior
Haley Scullion stuffed the stat sheet Wednesday, totaling four points, four rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Junior
Lauren Gold also did numerous different things for SU, scoring six points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
With the win, SU remains 2.5 games ahead of Millersville for second place in the PSAC East. The Raiders can clinch a first-round bye in the PSAC Tournament with either a win next Wednesday against Bloomsburg or a loss by Millersville in any of the Marauders final three games.
The Raiders are off Saturday while the rest of the PSAC East will play. SU will host Bloomsburg next Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m. in a special night at Heiges Field House that will include a
wish reveal at halftime of the women's game in partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
