SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team held visiting Bloomsburg to 28-percent shooting on Senior Night Wednesday as the Raiders clinched a first-round bye in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament with a 60-42 victory over the Huskies inside Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (20-6, 16-6 PSAC) secured its second 20-win season in the last four years under head coach
Kristy Trn '92/'93M and in the process, claimed the PSAC East's No. 2 seed. The Raiders have won at least 17 games in each of the last four seasons under Trn, who is now just three victories shy of 300 for her coaching career.
Junior
Lauren Gold stepped up with a game-high 20 points, making four three-pointers and going 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. Gold scored 17 of her 20 points in the second half, as the Raiders outscored the Huskies 32-18 over the final 20 minutes of play.
SU's lone graduating senior,
Shaniece Jackson, earned her first career start in her 83rd career contest. Jackson made the most of her time on the floor, providing two points and an assist while tying a season high with four rebounds.
The Raiders outrebounded Bloomsburg (13-13, 10-12) by a 41-26 margin. Junior
Morgan Griffith had 16 of those rebounds to herself, recording her 15th double-double of the season as she scored 12 points and had three assists.
SU also improved to 14-2 this season when it posts a positive assist-to-turnover ratio – the Raiders finished with 18 assists and 16 turnovers on Wednesday. The victory also snapped a four-game losing streak to the Huskies.
Junior
Haley Scullion came off the bench Wednesday but had an outstanding evening, providing 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Scullion was especially active defensively, notching four steals and tying a career-high with three blocks. Fellow junior
Colleen Young had nine points, four rebounds and two assists.
Bloomsburg senior Adreana Sadowski, who went off for a Husky record 43 points in the previous meeting this season, was held to 10 points on Wednesday night. The Huskies shot 1-of-11 from the field in the third quarter, scoring just six points, as the Raiders built an 11-point lead entering the final 10 minutes.
Shippensburg will host a team to be determined at 7 p.m. Tuesday from Heiges Field House. SU's PSAC Quarterfinal appearance is its fourth in the last five years.
