CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team was unable to complete a second-half comeback Saturday, falling to Cheyney, 64-62, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at Cope Hall.
Shippensburg (18-6, 14-6 PSAC) spent most of the afternoon trying to catch the Wolves after Cheyney raced out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter. The Raiders trailed by as many as 18 in the second quarter, but finished the first half on a 13-4 run to cut the Wolves' lead to seven.
However, in the second half Cheyney was able to continue to stave off the Raiders' multiple pushes. SU was able to stay within single digits for a majority of the second half, but a three-pointer by Cheyney's Amber Genwright increased the Cheyney lead to 10 with 5:50 remaining.
The Raiders had one more run in the them as they eventually cut the Cheyney lead to two with 40 seconds remaining when junior
Lauren Gold found junior
Logan Snyder for a layup. The Raiders twice more came within two points in the final minute, but could not find the game-tying bucket.
Snyder finished with a team-high 18 points, four rebounds and three assists. Gold scored 14 points and led SU with five assists.
The Raiders were balanced Saturday as junior
Colleen Young scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds while junior
Morgan Griffith recorded nine points and 12 rebounds.
SU returns home Wednesday to host Lock Haven in a PSAC East matchup set to tip off at 6 p.m. from Heiges Field House.
