SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team shook off a tough shooting night Monday with clutch scoring late to notch an overtime win over East Stroudsburg, 68-65, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (16-4, 12-4 PSAC) and ESU were tied with 25 seconds remaining in overtime when junior
Colleen Young dribbled past the ESU defense along the baseline and finished a reverse layup to take a two-point lead.
The Raiders were called for a foul on the ensuing Warrior possession, but ESU converted on only 1-of-2 free throws. Young was fouled and sank both free throws to take a three-point advantage with five seconds remaining.
ESU's game-tying three-point attempt missed long.
Young finished the night with a team-high 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals. Junior
Logan Snyder was the other Raider in double figures with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists. SU struggled from the field, shooting 36.4 percent, but it did make 16-of-19 free throws.
The Raiders started quickly Monday, racing out to a 22-9 lead after one quarter and eventually a 43-30 halftime lead. However, SU went cold in second half, allowing ESU to slowly work its way back into the game.
A Melissa Poderis three-pointer at the 5:05 mark of the fourth quarter gave ESU its first lead of the second half, and the teams began to go back and forth. Sophomore
Kristin McGeough was key for SU, providing a pair of buckets in the fourth and stifling interior defense. The sophomore forward finished with seven points, five rebounds and a career-high four blocks.
SU tied the game 58-58 with a
Logan Snyder foul shot, and that's how the game went to overtime as ESU and SU traded empty possessions before the Warriors missed a corner three-pointer at the regulation horn.
Snyder was key in overtime as she made back-to-back tough layups to give SU a three-point lead. ESU scored three straight points before junior
Haley Scullion again gave SU the lead with a lay-in. The Warriors' Tyeca Reviere, who scored a game-high 19 points, tied the score once more with a layup before Young gave Shippensburg the lead for good.
Junior
Lauren Gold scored seven points and tied her career-high with eight rebounds. Junior
Morgan Griffith scored six points and grabbed eight boards.
With the victory, Shippensburg reclaims first place as it sits in a tie with West Chester atop of the PSAC Eastern Division.
The Raiders are back in action Wednesday when they host Mansfield at 6 p.m. from Heiges Field House.
