The Shippensburg University women's basketball team dropped an overtime showdown at Seton Hill on Sunday afternoon, 70-67, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) cross-over matchup from the McKenna Center.
Shippensburg (5-3, 1-3 PSAC) got off to a fast start, opening the game on an 11-0 run and using an efficient first half to take a 16-point advantage over Seton Hill (5-3, 3-1) into the break.
In the first 20 minutes, the Raiders shot 50 percent from the field and 16-of-17 from the charity stripe. The 16 first-half free-throw makes are the most in a first half for the Raiders since they made 18 on Feb. 1, 2014 in a 101-65 victory over Cheyney.
Graduate
Stephanie Knauer led the Raiders offensively in the first half with 13 points including a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Senior
Colleen Young added eight first-half points including a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, it was a tale of two halves against the Griffins. After Shippensburg outscored Seton Hill 39-23 in the first half, the Griffins returned the favor in the second half outscoring the Raiders 47-28. The game would eventually need an overtime period to determine the winner.
Knauer gave the Raiders a two-point advantage with five seconds left in regulation after making two free throws, but the Griffins sent the game into overtime after Alex Hay made a put-back at the buzzer after rebounding a missed three-pointer.
In overtime, both teams exchanged points throughout and it looked like the Raiders had victory in their sights when Young finished a three-point play the old fashioned way off an assist from senior
Logan Snyder. SU held a one-point lead with just 18 seconds remaining, but Seton Hill would respond with another bucket from Hay to dash the Raider hopes of securing a win, as SU had misses on its final two possessions.
Shippensburg had four players score in double figures including Knauer with a game-high 22. Young and senior
Lauren Gold were the only other starters in double figures compiling 13 points each. Senior
Haley Scullion added 10 points off the bench for the Raiders in the loss.
Senior
Morgan Griffith was held without a field goal but led the Raiders with 11 rebounds. Young had five assists.
Shippensburg will return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday when it travels to California to take on the No. 3-ranked Vulcans.
