Volleyball Drops Five-Set Regional Tournament Thriller to Edinboro, 3-2

SU and EU go five sets for eighth straight overall meeting

Quotes and note to come.

WHEELING, W.Va. –
The Shippensburg University volleyball team engaged in another five-set showdown with vaunted rival Edinboro on Friday afternoon at the 2016 NCAA Atlantic Region Championships, but ended up on the short end of the decision to the Fighting Scots from Wheeling Jesuit's McDonough Center.

Set scores were 14-25, 25-17, 19-25, 26-24 and 15-13 in Edinboro's favor.

Shippensburg (26-8) out-scored Edinboro (24-8) by five points overall, but the Fighting Scots won the final two sets by two points each to nip the Raiders. It was the first match in 17 days for each team.

Friday's contest marked the eighth consecutive meeting that the two teams have played five sets, and the fourth out of the last five overall that has been decided by two points in the fifth set. Edinboro prevailed by two points in five sets in both of its 2016 meetings with the Raiders, having won 16-14 in five back on October 1.

Shippensburg had set leads of 1-0 and 2-1 and worked a match point in the fourth set at 24-23, but Edinboro rallied for the final three points of the frame. The Fighting Scots rallied from a 22-19 deficit in the fourth set and a 9-7 hole in the fifth set. EU went on a 5-0 run to lead 12-9 and ultimately win by two points.

The Raiders got key contributions from a wide array of players, out-blocking Edinboro 8-7 and finishing with an impressive .206 hitting percentage: SU's best rate in an NCAA Tournament match since its postseason debut back in 2007.

Senior Annie Goerl finished with her 11th double-double of the year on a season-high 21 kills, swinging an impressive .255, to complement 11 digs and two block assists. Freshman Gabriella Johnson was also an integral hitter, smacking 13 kills and hitting .136.

Head coach Leanne Piscotty inserted senior Rebecca Pryor into the starting lineup to match up with Edinboro middle hitter Latoya Hutchinson. Pryor finished her collegiate career with her finest match as a Raider: ripping a career-high 12 kills on just one error, for a career-best single-game hitting percentage of .478. She also led the Raiders with five block assists in an outstanding performance.

Senior Maura Nolan became just the ninth player in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) history to surpass 5,000 career assists. Nolan finished with 48 assists, 16 digs and served as many aces (three) as Edinboro's entire team did in the match.

Sophomore Morgan DeFloria had 11 kills and hit .229, while freshman Samantha Webber added four kills and three blocks.

Senior Maria Peluso led the Raiders with 20 digs in addition to six assists and two aces. Freshman Megan Forstburg added 15 digs from the back row.

Shippensburg made its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and its fourth in the last five years under Piscotty (2007, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016).

More to come.
