BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team went back and forth with host Bloomsburg on Saturday, but the Red Raiders were bested by the Huskies, 22-19, in its final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup of the 2016 season.
Shippensburg (6-4, 4-3 PSAC) limited Bloomsburg (6-4, 4-3) to just 191 yards of total offense (95 passing, 96 rushing), but the Red Raiders were held scoreless for the final 20 minutes of play. The Huskies used a short field to score a go-ahead touchdown with 9:05 remaining, and SU had a potential game-tying, 31-yard field goal blocked with 2:05 remaining in regulation.
Sophomore
Chase Yocum broke the single-season school record for rushing yards by a quarterback, as he ran for a career-high 124 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. Yocum has totaled a team-best 638 rushing yards this season, surpassing the mark set last season by junior
Ryan Zapoticky (561 yards).
SU got on the board first after junior kicker
Billy Deane converted a 48-yard field goal attempt with six minutes remaining in the first quarter. Deane's kick was the longest of his career and was one yard shy of tying Drew Newcomer's school record of 49 yards set in 2013.
Bloomsburg took the lead on Lawrence Elliott's three-yard run with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter. The Huskies took a 7-3 lead into the second quarter.
After a Deane 40-yard punt pinned the Huskies inside their own 15, the Red Raiders made it 7-5 when senior
Allen Holman tackled Elliott in the end zone for a safety. The play was set up by an 11-yard sack on the preceding play by sophomore
Richard Nase.
On Shippensburg's ensuing possession, Yocum compiled 60 yards, including a 41-yard scamper. Three plays after that long run, junior
Cole Chiappialle plunged into the end zone to give Shippensburg a 12-7 lead.
Bloomsburg's second touchdown also came off a short field. Just more than two minutes before halftime, Elliott scored from eight yards out and ran in a two-point conversion to give the Huskies a 15-12 lead heading into the break.
The only touchdown of the third quarter occurred on a 1-yard touchdown run by Yocum that capped off a 9-play, 63-yard drive in which he converted a 22-yard pass to senior
Erik Kerns. SU held a 19-15 lead into the fourth quarter before the Huskies got what proved to be the game's final score.
Shippensburg had to punt with 4:31 remaining, but the Red Raider defense forced their third turnover of the day on the next play. Senior
Kevin Goldsmith knocked the ball loose a well-placed tackle, and Nase lunged to recover the fumble at the Bloomsburg 13-yard line.
SU could not gain any ground on the ensuing drive, however, and Deane's 31-yard field goal attempt to tie the game was blocked. The Red Raiders did get the ball back with 55 seconds remaining and no timeouts, but ultimately turned the ball over on downs at the SU 44-yard line.
Shippensburg's defense was again sensational. SU limited BU quarterback Duffy Gilhool to just 9-of-19 passing for 95 yards. Senior
Jordan Harper intercepted his first career pass in the first half, and senior
Chad Miller had an interception in the second half.
Bloomsburg, long known for its vaunted rushing attack, finished with just 96 rushing yards on 41 carries – an average of 2.3 yards per carry. It's the fewest rushing yards for Bloomsburg in a game against Shippensburg since 2003. By comparison, the Huskies ran for 352 yards last season against the Red Raiders.
Holman led the Red Raiders with 10 tackles, including three for loss, with the safety and also a sack. Sophomore
Tyler Emge had nine tackles, including 2.5 for loss, while Nase finished with five tackles, including 2.5 for loss, with 1.5 sacks.
Sophomore
J.T. Hopple had a career-high seven tackles. Goldsmith and senior
D.J. Burkey also had seven tackles.
Junior
Cole Chiappialle produced 225 all-purpose yards on the day – his second 200-plus yard day of the season. Chiappialle ran for 71 yards and a touchdown, averaging 4.7 yards per carry, in addition to leading the team with four receptions (25 yards). He also had 94 kickoff return yards and 35 punt return yards.
Both of SU's touchdowns on the day were 1-yard touchdown runs. Incredibly, 13 of SU's 25 rushing touchdowns this season (52 percent) have been from just one yard out – including five by Chiappialle.
Saturday's contest marks the first time in 67 games under head coach Mark 'Mac' Maciejewski that back-to-back games have been decided by just three points.
Shippensburg will conclude the 2016 regular season at noon Saturday in Greensburg when it takes on Seton Hill.
