SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team scored 46 points in the paint on Wednesday night and allowed its fewest points in a game in 11 seasons, stifling visiting UDC by a 70-33 score in a non-conference matchup from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (5-1) used an early 11-0 run to build a six-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Raiders led by 13 points at the end of the first quarter and did not allow the visitors to score more than seven points in any of the final three frames.
Senior
Colleen Young was efficient on both ends of the floor and led all players with 17 points, shooting 8-of-11 from the field to go along with four assists and four rebounds. Young is 13-of-19 from the field over her last two games.
Senior
Morgan Griffith notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while graduate
Stephanie Knauer was just one point shy of her own double-double. Knauer finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Senior
Logan Snyder had nine points on 4-of-5 shooting, as 11 different Raiders finished the night with at least two points. Freshman
Shavonna Waters scored her first collegiate points on a nice give-and-go with junior
Victoria Blackburn, while sophomore
Lauren Grzyboski drew contact driving into the paint and converted her free throws for her first collegiate points.
UDC (1-6) shot just 17.5 percent from the field in the contest, including a 4-of-34 (11.7 percent) rate after halftime. The 33 points scored by the Firebirds are the fewest by an SU opponent since Slippery Rock totaled the same amount back on Jan. 29, 2005.
Shippensburg returns to conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday at IUP.
