The No. 1 Shippensburg University field hockey team fell to No. 2 East Stroudsburg, 2-1, in double overtime on Saturday in a classic battle and a matchup of the top-ranked teams in NCAA Division II.
Shippensburg (14-2, 7-1 PSAC) had won nine straight games coming into the highly anticipated showdown against East Stroudsburg (14-3, 8-1). Both of SU's losses this season have now been at the hands of the Warriors, and both have come in overtime.
The Raiders grabbed the early advantage after junior
Emily Barnard scored in the 19th minute off an assist from junior
Kylie Huffman. Shippensburg would take that one-goal advantage into halftime.
East Stroudsburg got a goal 10 minutes into the second half from Robin Stevenson and later won on a golden goal by Ashley Chioda, who scored in the 96th minute. ESU posted a 20-14 advantage in shots but SU held a 16-12 margin in penalty corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ally Mooney made seven saves in the defeat. The SU defense had yielded just four goals on the season entering Saturday.
Shippensburg will return to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they host Kutztown at Robb Sports Complex.
