SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Maura Nolan broke the school record for career assists on Tuesday night as the Shippensburg University volleyball team posted a straight-set victory over Millersville (25-18, 25-16, 25-19) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (16-3, 5-2 PSAC) held comfortable leads in each set, utilizing multiple reserves in the first set after staking out advantages of 7-2, 18-9 and 20-10. SU recovered from a 10-7 deficit in the second set with a big service run from senior
Brittany Whitacre, scoring eight straight points on her serve to flip the frame.
The Raiders hit .275 as a team, ripping 42 kills on just 12 errors. Nolan did an excellent job of distributing the ball to SU's middle hitters: freshman
Kendall Johnson ripped 12 kills on 19 attempts and hit .474, while freshman
Samantha Webber had six kills, two block assists and hit .211.
Senior
Annie Goerl continued the most efficient hitting season of her career, totaling seven kills on 14 attempts with just one error. She also had 10 digs. Goerl, hitting .219 this season, is now at 876 career kills – 10th-most in school history – and 20 shy of former teammate
Faith Athey for ninth all-time at SU.
Sophomore
Morgan DeFloria had nine kills on the night, including a couple of thunderous spikes from the middle, while freshman
Gabriella Johnson snuck in five kills without an error on eight attempts. Gabriella had 12 digs, while senior
Maria Peluso had a team-high 13 digs.
Whitacre had two of SU's six aces on the night – Nolan also added two, while Peluso and Goerl each contributed one. Peluso is now tied with Kelsi Hoffman for 10th all-time at SU in career aces (143); Hoffman was among an SU alumni contingent in attendance at Tuesday's game.
Also among those SU alumni in attendance Tuesday night was Maureen 'Bean' DuVall, SU's previous record holder for career assists (4,475). Nolan (4,481) and DuVall, between the two of them, have totaled an incredible 8,956 assists. Nolan is now ninth all-time in PSAC history, with DuVall slotting 11th in league history.
Shippensburg will host West Chester at 7 p.m. Friday from Heiges Field House. On Saturday, SU will be holding its Dig Pink event while hosting Cheyney (1 p.m.) and Ursuline (5 p.m.) – auctioning off baskets with the proceeds going to the Side-Out Foundation.
