Women’s Basketball Wins Tenth Straight, Beating Cheyney, 83-65

SU has all five starters score at least nine points; Raiders score 29 points off turnovers

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 10 straight games on Saturday afternoon as all five starters scored at least nine points in an 83-65 victory over visiting Cheyney from Heiges Field House.
 
Shippensburg (15-2, 11-2 PSAC) and Cheyney (2-14, 0-12) exchanged the lead six times in the first quarter, as the score was 17-17 through the opening 10 minutes. With seven minutes remaining before the intermission, SU embarked upon a 9-2 run to build a 10-point advantage, 34-24, with 4:03 to play.  
 
The Raiders scored 27 points in the second quarter to lead 44-31 at halftime. SU then outscored Cheyney 22-11 in the third quarter, closing the frame on a 10-0 run, to lead by 24 points entering the final quarter.
 
Shippensburg built its halftime lead by scoring 19 points off 14 first-half turnovers by Cheyney. SU finished the game scoring 29 points off Cheyney turnovers while the Raiders committed just 10 turnovers of their own. Through 17 contests this season, Shippensburg has posted a positive assist-to-turnover ratio 11 times.
 
Junior Morgan Griffith hauled in her ninth double-double of the season. She led SU in points (24), rebounds (10) and assists (4) on the day while tying sophomore Victoria Blackburn for the team lead with two steals. Over her last seven games, Griffith is averaging 18.6 points and 11.4 rebounds per game while leading the team with 18 steals.
 
Juniors Lauren Gold and Logan Snyder each scored 13 points. Gold also had two rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Junior Colleen Young had nine points, three assists and three rebounds.
 
Junior Haley Scullion continued her excellent play with 12 points, including a nifty three-point play during the second quarter, as she shot 5-of-7 from the floor. She also had three assists and did not commit a turnover in 27 minutes of action.
 
In her 11 starts this season, Scullion has averaged 9.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while committing just eight total turnovers despite averaging 33 minutes per game.
 
Off the bench, Blackburn had six points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
 
Shippensburg is off Wednesday night, and will return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday versus East Stroudsburg at Heiges Field House.
