The Shippensburg University women's basketball team trailed for the overwhelming majority of its Wednesday night contest at Lock Haven, but ultimately overcame a sluggish shooting night by surviving the host Bald Eagles in overtime, 67-63, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division clash at Thomas Fieldhouse.
Shippensburg (14-2, 10-2 PSAC) won its ninth straight game despite shooting under 40 percent from the field for just the second time this season. SU shot just 39 percent, including 11 percent from three-point range, had a season-low six assists, and made just 58 percent (18-of-31) of its free-throw attempts.
The lack of rhythm could partly be attributed to an off-kilter schedule, as the team's bus broke down about halfway through its trip to Lock Haven. After a lengthy delay in Sunbury, Shippensburg got back on the road in a new bus, but the start of the contest was delayed by more than 45 minutes to accommodate SU's arrival.
The Raiders trailed by as many 10 points in the game and never held a lead until sophomore guard
Victoria Blackburn made her first field goal of the night with 1:15 to play. It was SU's only three-pointer of the game, and gave Shippensburg a 58-57 lead.
Lock Haven (7-9, 4-8), who won last year's home meeting with the Raiders by two points, tied the score at 58-58 by making 1-of-2 free throws with 34 seconds to play. Both teams had run empty possessions preceding the free-throw attempts.
After a missed jumper by Shippensburg, Lock Haven called timeout with eight seconds left to run a play and move the ball up the floor. The Raider defense stepped up, preventing the Bald Eagles from getting off a shot before the horn sounded to conclude regulation.
Shippensburg scored the first four points of overtime but led by just one point with less than 30 seconds to play. Blackburn's only other field goal of the night proved to be just as important as her first, as she made a jumper with 20 seconds remaining to put SU up by three, 66-63. The Raiders then forced a turnover and made 1-of-2 free throws to cement the win.
Junior
Morgan Griffith produced her eighth double-double of the season, totaling 22 points on 8-of-23 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds and career highs of four assists and five steals. Griffith recorded four assists for the second straight game and the fifth time in her career.
Junior
Logan Snyder scored 17 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 7-of-8 at the free-throw line. Junior
Haley Scullion had seven points and five rebounds, while junior
Colleen Young had four points and four rebounds.
From the point, junior
Lauren Gold struggled with foul trouble all night, managing just six points, two assists and two steals in 26 minutes before ultimately fouling out with 1:38 to play. Gold's fifth foul put Blackburn into the game, setting the stage for her to hit the go-ahead shot just 23 seconds later.
Shippensburg will look to make it 10-in-a-row on Saturday as it returns home to host Cheyney at 1 p.m. from Heiges Field House. The Wolves (2-13, 0-11) put a major scare in West Chester on Wednesday night, leading by six points at halftime before ultimately falling, 60-54.
