SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team shocked East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon as sophomore
Kat Hartner scored the game-winning goal with 22 seconds remaining in regulation for a 3-2 victory in front of a home crowd at David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-0-1, 1-0-1 PSAC), which trailed 2-1 with five minutes to go was able to tie it up when sophomore
Jenny Litz perfectly placed a shot into the right side of the goal in the 85th minute. Litz then had another good look at a shot in the final minute, but it was deflected. Hartner corralled the loose ball in front of the net and tapped it past East Stroudsburg goalkeeper Jules Harris to secure the win.
"To snap (that streak) and to do it at home, score three goals, which was the difficult part last year for us, I am very pleased," Shippensburg head coach
Rob Fulton said of his team that scored three goals in a game once in 2014. "Hopefully this is just a starting point and we can elevate ourselves into the upper levels of this conference."
The Raiders started quickly as junior
Stephanie Allshouse lofted a corner kick that was headed in by sophomore
Bailey Bzdak just 43 seconds into the match. East Stroudsburg tied the game in the 40th minute and took the lead in the 55th. However, the Raiders continually fought for quality chances before finding the back of the net twice in the last five minutes.
"We started to knock passes around – connect and combine and get forward and keep possession. That's how those goals happened," Fulton said. "They happened with moving the ball and keeping possession."
Shippensburg was outshot 20-14 (14-8 in shots on goal), but Raider goalkeeper
Leah Roy played well, saving 12 shots. Among Shippensburg's eight shots on goal was freshman
Katie Rauch's first of her career.
East Stroudsburg, which entered as the No. 11-ranked team in the nation, was the PSAC regular season and postseason champion in 2014. Shippensburg's win ends a PSAC-record 19 consecutive wins and also snapped a nation-best 22-game unbeaten streak by East Stroudsburg.
"I think it's a huge confidence booster for (our players) to know they can play with a team like (East Stroudsburg)," Fulton said. "Then be down also, 2-1, with 30 minutes or so and to equalize and then find that one later on. Fantastic."
The Raiders return to action Friday in a match at Edinboro, beginning at 1 p.m.
