CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team opened its season Thursday and played to a 1-1 draw with California in a game that was called with 8:19 remaining due to ongoing lightning.
Shippensburg (0-0-1, 0-0-1 PSAC) fell behind 1-0 on a breakaway goal with less than 30 seconds to go in the first half. The Raiders, however, responded quickly out of the break. Junior
Ashley Weaver took advantage of a loose ball following a collision with the goalkeeper to score the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half.
The game was played evenly until the lightning, which delayed the game roughly 30 minutes to start, returned and ended the season opener early. The game was ended due to a three-hour maximum time limit for completion of a contest.
Shippensburg had six shots on goal to California's three. Raider goalkeeper, sophomore
Leah Roy, made two saves in her Shippensburg debut.
Among the other Shippensburg players to make their debuts were freshman
Beth McGee and redshirt-freshman
Anna Snee.
Shippensburg will host East Stroudsburg at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in a conference match at David See Field.
