BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team defeated Bloomsburg, 1-0, in a hard fought match that was decided in a 1v1 post-overtime session Saturday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. SU scored twice while Bloomsburg did not find the cage in the 1v1 session.
Junior
Katelyn Grazan and sophomore
Morgan Gantz scored for Shippensburg (5-1). Grazan was the first player from either team to shoot, and Gantz followed with a goal as the second Raider to take her turn.
From there senior goalkeeper
Taylor Webster did the rest as she did allow any of Bloomsburg's (4-2) takers to score.
Webster finished with eight saves in her fifth win of the season. Although SU did not find the back of the cage during regulation or the two overtime periods, it finished with a 21-11 shot advantage, including a 19-8 edge in shots on goal. Seven different SU players had two shots on goal with sophomore
Brooke Sheibley and junior
Suzanne Muller each recording three.
Saturday's match was the first Shippensburg match decided by penalty strokes or the new 1v1 overtime in more than 10 years. The last time penalty strokes were needed in an SU match was Sept. 9, 2004, also against Bloomsburg.
SU will play its second of four straight on the road Wednesday at Kutztown, starting at 7 p.m.
