Junior
Kendall Beck scored with 19 seconds left in regulation Wednesday night to propel the No. 3 Shippensburg University field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over No. 5 Kutztown in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener for the Raiders.
Â
Shippensburg (6-1, 1-0 PSAC) managed a significant possession edge in the contest, out-shooting Kutztown (4-3, 1-1) by a 23-8 margin and posting an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.
Â
SU got on the board just under 10 minutes in, as freshman
Brooke Zeiders tipped in a shot from junior
Katelyn Grazan. Zeiders' third goal of the year came shortly after a shot by senior
Ari Saytar on SU's first corner of the match.
Â
The Golden Bears answered with just more than 10 minutes left in the half – converting a penalty stroke after a shot was stopped on the goal line. It made the score 1-1 at halftime.
Â
Grazan gave SU the lead eight minutes into the second half, potting her second goal of the year with a deflection off a back-handed pass from sophomore
Emily Barnard. The assist for Barnard gives her a point in five of seven games this season.
Â
KU tied it with 12 minutes to go, with Anna Behm caging her 10th goal of the year to make the score 2-2. With time waning in regulation, however, it was Beck who sent a shot through a screen and into the goal to give the Raiders the win.
Â
Senior
Taylor Webster was credited with five saves for the Raiders, while KU keeper Kayla Denlinger recorded 11 saves.
Â
Shippensburg continues its four-game road trip this weekend with a 1 p.m. Saturday match at IUP.Â
