SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team got a goal in the 14th minute of play Tuesday evening from junior
Casey Rightmyer and used that tally to stave off visiting Pitt-Johnstown, winning 1-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup held under the lights at David See Field.
Shippensburg (2-2-1, 2-2-1 PSAC) held the territorial edge throughout the contest, posting a 24-7 advantage in shots and a 4-1 margin in corner kicks. Rightmyer nearly opened the scoring in the 11th minute, firing a rising rocket shot off the crossbar, before she nabbing her first goal of the season three minutes later by grabbing a loose ball in the box and sneaking it through a crowd and into the lower portion of the net.
Pitt-Johnstown (0-5, 0-5) held its own with some capable defense and a strong goaltending performance by Leigh Appolonia. The visiting keeper made a diving stop on a penalty kick in the final minute of the first half and also made several leaping stops in which she punched a shot over the bar. She finished with 10 saves.
Sophomore
Leah Roy recorded her first collegiate shutout by recording two saves. She had to make a stop just 17 seconds into the contest and ultimately improved her record to 2-2-1.
Shippensburg is at Kutztown on Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Golden Bears.
