SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Emily Barnard scored two goals and added an assist Tuesday as the Shippensburg University field hockey team beat Slippery Rock, 5-0, on a sunny afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Barnard's first goal came on a successful redirection early in the second half that boosted Shippensburg's lead to 3-0. She then scored again less than three minutes later on a sensational pass by freshman
Brooke Zeiders that allowed Barnard to score from right in front of the cage. The second goal, Barnard's sixth of the season, increased her team lead in the category.
Â
Barnard then returned the favor, setting up Zeiders for a goal in the 51st minute that rounded out SU's scoring for the afternoon.
Â
Sophomore
Morgan Gantz opened the scoring for Shippensburg as she took advantage of space inside the arc, dribbling towards the goal and lacing a shot past the Slippery Rock goalkeeper.
Â
The Raiders then added to their total as the first half ended. On an untimed corner after the first-half clock hit zero, junior
Kendall Beck set up senior
Ari Saytar for a shot that Saytar lobbed up and off the blocker of Slippery Rock's goalie and into the goal.
Â
On the afternoon, SU outshot The Rock, 31-8, including an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Raiders also earned 15 penalty corners to SRU's three. Senior goalkeeper
Taylor Webster earned the win, making six saves in almost 63 minutes of action. Redshirt-freshman
Catherine Matuszko made her debut, playing the last 7:16, preserving the shutout.
Â
Shippensburg travels to Bloomsburg on Saturday for an 11 a.m. start with the Huskies.
