Softball Concludes Regular Season With Sweep of Mansfield, 9-0, 11-5

Liz Parkins throws five-inning no-hitter in Game 1; SU eliminated from playoff contention

Senior Liz Parkins tossed a five-inning no-hitter in Game 1 Saturday as the Shippensburg University softball team swept Mansfield, 9-0 in the opener, and 11-5 in the nightcap, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader from Hellen Lutes Field. Despite the sweep, SU was eliminated from playoff contention.

Shippensburg (17-18, 12-16 PSAC East) scored at least one run in all five innings in the opener and Mansfield (11-23-1, 6-20) was unable to manage a hit.

For Parkins, the five-inning no-hitter was her first of any variety in her career.

Junior Briana Giovenco and freshman Chloe Collins each hit two-run home runs in Game 1 while senior Tyler Thompson hit 2-for-4 with four stolen bases and scored two runs.

Thompson finished the afternoon 5-for-7 with four runs, one RBI, a double and five stolen bases. She ends her career as the all-time stolen base leader in SU history with 97 steals, third-most in PSAC history.

Senior Maddie Justice went 5-for-7 with four RBIs, a double, a walk and two runs. Senior Taylor Weisman went 3-for-6 with two doubles, two runs, one RBI and one walk.

In Game 2, the Raiders led 4-2 after three innings, but Mansfield tied it up at 5-5 in the fifth inning after SU had scored one run in the top half of the frame.

In the sixth inning, senior Makenzie Lynn plated the eventual game-winning runs on a two-run home run to center field. She finished 2-for-2 at the plate in the nightcap while picking up the win in the circle, pitching four innings and striking out four batters.

Giovenco homered in the third inning of Game 2, a three-run shot, her second home run of the day and fifth of the season.

Junior Quincy Lewis struck out two in 1.1 innings of relief.

Freshman Eryn Caragein finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with a run, walk and stolen base while junior Taylor Pattillo went 3-for-7 with a double and a run.

Freshman Taylor Dorman went 1-for-2 with two runs, one RBI and a stolen base.

As a team, SU hit .441 on the day and held Mansfield to a .167 average.
