Softball Remains Alive in PSAC Playoff Race With Road Sweep of East Stroudsburg

SU wins 12-5, 5-4 on a snowy and cold day in the Poconos

The Shippensburg University softball team cranked out 17 runs and 21 hits on Thursday to sweep East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division road doubleheader, winning by scores of 12-5 and 5-4 on a frigid and, at times, snowy afternoon at Zimbar Field.

Shippensburg (14-17, 9-15 PSAC East) remained alive the PSAC playoff race; the Raiders remain two games behind East Stroudsburg (18-17, 11-13) but salvaged a season series split with Thursday's wins. SU will also have to make its way ahead of Lock Haven (10-14) and Millersville (9-15) before season's end, and the Raiders do not have the tiebreaker over either team.

In the circle, senior Makenzie Lynn notched her second complete game of the year in Game 2. Lynn allowed one earned run in seven innings, walking four and striking out four. Save for a rough patch in the fifth inning in which ESU had four runs (one earned) and four hits, Lynn allowed just two hits the rest of the game. Junior Quincy Lewis pitched 4.2 innings of shutout relief for the Game 1 win.

Junior Briana Giovenco was 5-of-9 at the plate with five RBIs in the doubleheader. Giovenco had a pair of run-scoring singles in Game 1 and had her second two-run single of the day in Game 2. Senior Liz Parkins was the starting pitcher in Game 1 and the designated player in Game 2; she finished the day 3-for-5 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs.

Senior Maddie Justice was 4-for-7 with a solo home run, three RBIs, two walks and two runs. In four games this season against ESU, Justice was 7-for-12 (.583) with four walks for a .688 on-base percentage.

Junior Taylor Pattillo had two hits, including a double, and a bases-loaded walk, while senior Taylor Weisman doubled home a run.

Shippensburg hosts Kutztown at 1 p.m. Friday from Robb Field for Senior Day. Between games, SU will honor its six seniors: Justice, Lynn, Parkins, Tyler Thompson, Jessie Trammell and Weisman.
