Lacrosse Uses First-Half Surge to Hold Off Kutztown in PSAC Affair, 12-10

SU scores nine times in opening 30 minutes, gets 13 saves from goalkeeper Frymoyer

The Shippensburg University lacrosse team raced out to a 9-2 lead at halftime on Tuesday, using its early advantage and 13 saves from junior goalkeeper Ally Frymoyer to hold off home-standing Kutztown, 12-10, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown at Andre Reed Stadium.

Shippensburg (3-7, 1-4 PSAC) held Kutztown (1-7, 0-5) scoreless for the first 17 minutes of play, leading 4-0 before the Golden Bears got on the board.

Trailing 10-2 in the second half, KU reeled off seven of the next eight goals in a 15-minute span to get within two goals of the lead with 9:58 to go, but would not get closer than the final two-goal margin.

Frymoyer made 13 saves – including eight in the first half – for her fourth double-digit save effort of the season.

Senior Sheila Johnson scored four times, bringing her team-leading total to 27 goals in 10 games. Johnson is among the PSAC's Top 5 goal scorers this season.

Fellow senior Courtney Kennedy scored twice, while sophomore Amanda Frank had a goal and five assists. Frank leads the team with 14 assists this season.

Sophomore Max Barkley scored a goal, won five draw controls, nabbed two caused turnovers and picked up three groundballs. Fellow sophomore Ali Harclerode had three caused turnovers along with a goal, an assist, a draw control and two groundball pickups.

Also aiding in the defensive effort was sophomore Annemarie Cericola; she had a goal, two assists, two caused turnovers, two groundballs and a draw control. Freshman Makenzie Magnotta, a fellow backliner, led the team with four groundballs, while freshman Julia Wise had three.

Sophomore T.J. Johnson and freshman Allison Fugate also scored for Shippensburg. It was Fugate's first collegiate tally.

Shippensburg will host Gannon at 1 p.m. Saturday in a PSAC matchup at Robb Sports Complex.
