The Shippensburg University women's basketball team got 22 points from sophomore point guard
Lauren Gold on Saturday and the 13th double-double of the season from sophomore
Morgan Griffith, but it was not enough in a 72-70 road loss at Lock Haven in a PSAC East matchup at Thomas Fieldhouse.
Shippensburg (17-10, 13-8 PSAC) held a six-point lead with 4:39 to play but Lock Haven (11-14, 10-11) scored 19 points in the final 4:38 to take the victory. SU led by 12 points early in the first half, but the Lady Eagles — honoring six on their Senior Day — closed the half on a 12-2 run to lead by seven at the intermission.
Of Gold's 22 points, she was 10-of-10 from the free-throw line and 2-of-3 from three-point range. She also had seven rebounds and seven assists while committing just two turnovers in 34 minutes.
Griffith had 15 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals — hitting three three-pointers in the contest. It is her fourth consecutive double-double and seventh in the last nine games.
SU trailed by four points late before freshman
Vicky Tumasz hit a three-pointer that made the score 68-67 in LHU's favor with 21 seconds to play. After a pair of Lady Eagle free throws, Tumasz hit another three pointer to tie the score 70-70 with 13 seconds to go.
After a timeout, LHU nearly turned the ball over before possession eventually went to the top of the circle. J.J. Hilliard collected a pass, drove, and hit a jumper from the free-throw line with 1.1 seconds left. SU's ensuing chance went for naught.
Tumasz finished with 11 points, shooting 3-of-6 from three-point range. Junior
Stephanie Knauer and sophomore
Logan Snyder each added seven points.
Shippensburg had already clinched the PSAC East's No. 3 seed entering play Saturday. Lock Haven's win gave it a chance to play for the No. 4 seed on Wednesday, as the Lady Eagles and East Stroudsburg are tied with a 10-11 divisional record. Kutztown is currently the No. 6 seed, holding a 9-12 divisional record.
SU concludes the regular season at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Cheyney at Heiges Field House.
