SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team put forth a stellar defensive effort over the final minutes
Saturday to put away Seton Hill, 64-59, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (6-2, 4-2 PSAC) limited the Griffins to just four points over the final 5:31 of the game, including the final 2:34 in which Seton Hill did not score.
Seton Hill (5-4, 2-3) tied the game at 59-59 on a jumper by Lindsey Mifsud at the 2:34 mark. The teams traded empty possessions before junior
Morgan Griffith stole an errant pass to get it back for SU.
Junior
Logan Snyder was fouled on the ensuing possession and made both free throws to give the Raiders a lead they would not relinquish. After another stop, SU had a chance to ice the game, but junior
Lauren Gold's three-point attempt went in and out.
However, the Raider defense came through again with a stop and Gold then made two free throws to put the game away.
Gold had a fine afternoon, scoring 15 points, leading SU with six assists and grabbing three rebounds. Junior
Colleen Young led the Raiders with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go along with three assists and three rebounds.
Snyder was the third Raider in double digits with 16 points and six rebounds. Snyder made 7-of-8 from the line. Junior
Morgan Griffith missed much of the first half due to foul trouble, but finished with seven points and 15 rebounds. Griffith had four straight rebounds off Seton Hill misses down the stretch.
The Raiders appeared they would take control in the first half as they took a 32-22 lead with 3:30 left in the second quarter. However, the Griffins finished the half on a 13-3 run, including a buzzer-beating three, to tie the game 35-35 at halftime. Neither team led by more than eight points in the second half.
Seton Hill outshot SU 44.4 percent to 40.7 percent, but the Raiders forced 19 turnovers and outrebounded the Griffins 34-32.
SU also made 15-of-18 free throws while Seton Hill shot just five at the line, making three.
The Raiders are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Rams at 2 p.m.
