Women’s Basketball Closes Strong in Road Win Over Philadelphia U., 73-64

SU outscores the Rams 23-12 in the final 10 minutes

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team flourished in the fourth quarter Saturday as it rebounded from a second-half deficit to top Philadelphia U., 73-64, in a non-conference game at the Gallagher Center in Philadelphia.

Shippensburg (7-2) and Philadelphia both made 26-of-60 (43.3 percent) attempts from the field in the game. Both teams also made five three-pointers. However, the difference came at the free throw line, where SU made 16-of-21 attempts while Philadelphia converted just 7-of-19 from the charity stripe.

Junior Logan Snyder and junior Morgan Griffith shared the leading scorer duties for SU with 18 points apiece.

Snyder was efficient, making 5-of-8 field goal attempts and 8-of-9 tries from the free throw line. Griffith, the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week, recorded her fourth double-double of the season as she paired her 18 points with 13 rebounds.

Griffith is averaging 16.6 points and 11.6 rebounds through nine games for SU.

Eight different Raiders scored in the win as SU head coach Kristy Trn received big bench contributions. Sophomore Vicky Tumasz knocked down 3-of-4 three-point tries on her way to nine points. Senior Shaniece Jackson was busy in her eight minutes of action, scoring six points and grabbing three rebounds.

The Raiders outscored the Rams 17-2 in bench points.

SU entered the fourth quarter trailing 52-50, but the Raiders responded with a 7-0 run to begin the frame. Two Jackson free throws, a Tumasz three-pointer and a layup in transition by junior Lauren Gold comprised the run that forced a timeout by Philadelphia.

The Rams were able to tie the game at 61-61, but another Tumasz three-pointer was followed by a Griffith jumper to put the Raiders up five. SU never trailed again as back-to-back jumpers by junior Haley Scullion allowed the Raiders to keep their distance.

The Raiders are back in action Wednesday with a road contest at Mansfield, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
