Women’s Basketball Uses Outstanding Defensive Effort to Handle Davis & Elkins, 85-48

SU puts five in double figures in second-straight win

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team used a quick start and a smothering defense Saturday to stay unbeaten with an 85-48 win over Davis & Elkins in the women's finale of the 2015 Wolf's Bus Lines Classic at Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (2-0) took little time gaining control Saturday night as the Raiders scored the first 10 points of the game, forcing a Senators timeout. Davis & Elkins cut the early Shippensburg lead to 11-6, but never came closer as SU finished the first quarter on a 10-2 run.

The Raiders shot just 36.8 percent from the field in the first half, but limited Davis & Elkins to only four makes on 31 field-goal attempts (12.9 percent). Overall, the Senators shot just 24.3 percent from the field while SU forced 20 turnovers.

Shippensburg led 21-8 after the first quarter and 40-14 at halftime. SU then scored 19 points in the first six minutes of the third quarter and led by as many as 45 points, 74-29, with 8:43 to play.

Five Raiders finished in double figures, led by junior guard Logan Snyder's 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Senior Stephanie Knauer earned tournament MVP honors after recording a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Snyder and junior Morgan Griffith joined Knauer on the all-tournament team as Griffith followed up her double-double Friday with 11 points and six rebounds Saturday.

Junior Lauren Gold pitched in 12 points, a team-high four assists and three steals. Sophomore Vicky Tumasz knocked down a pair of three-pointers on her way to 10 points off the bench.

Ten different SU players scored, including sophomore Kristin McGeough and sophomore Victoria Blackburn, who each had six points.

SU begins PSAC play Wednesday with a trip to East Stroudsburg. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
