The Shippensburg University women's basketball team remained unbeaten on the young season Wednesday night with big first-half numbers in a 76-56 win at East Stroudsburg in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Shippensburg (3-0, 1-0 PSAC) outscored the Warriors 47-25 in the first half, including a 24-10 advantage in the second quarter. SU started well, jumping out to a 16-6 lead early, but East Stroudsburg (0-2, 0-1) responded with a 9-0 run to cut the Shippensburg lead to one with 1:33 remaining in the first quarter.
The Raiders responded by closing out the first half on a 31-10 run despite playing without two starting guards, junior
Lauren Gold and junior
Logan Snyder, who both picked up two fouls in the first quarter. SU shot 51.5 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
SU's first-half effectiveness centered around junior
Morgan Griffith's big night. Griffith finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds, with 16 and 15 of those, respectively, coming in the first half.
Griffith finished 6-of-11 from the field and made all six of her free throw attempts.
Providing stability off the bench was sophomore
Victoria Blackburn, who scored 10 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists and a career-high five blocks. Reserve forward, junior
Haley Scullion, added 10 points and three rebounds in just 13 minutes.
Senior
Stephanie Knauer made it three straight games with double-digit points to start the season as she scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Gold finished with nine points, making all three three-point attempts.
SU is back in action Saturday, when it begins a weekend of PSAC West crossovers with a 1 p.m. start at Mercyhurst.
