SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 4 Shippensburg University field hockey team battled No. 1 Millersville Wednesday in a competitive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest, but the visiting Marauders scored on a penalty corner in overtime to notch a 1-0 victory over the Raiders at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (8-3, 3-2 PSAC) and Millersville (12-0, 5-0) combined for just eight shots on goal in a contest that was marred with whistles and never quite established a steady flow. The Marauders managed 10 corners to SU's five, but the majority of the contest was played in the middle of the field – maximizing the importance of each team's passing.
The most notable scoring chance of the first half was stymied by sophomore
Rajchel Moore, who made a running stop on the end line for a defensive save at the 15-minute mark. Moore's stick work prevented the opportunity off a MU penalty corner.
SU forced visiting Millersville keeper Samantha Rumler to make more saves Wednesday than she had in her previous six games (358 minutes) this season. Rumler entered the game having made two saves on the year but had to make three Wednesday to keep the Raiders out of the net.
Shippensburg also applied the pressure at the start of the overtime, controlling possession and registering three penalty corners in the first four minutes of the extra session. Four of SU's five penalty corners in the match came during the overtime period.
It was ultimately Millersville's Olivia Hershey who notched the game-winning goal. Hershey had to enter the arc to bring the ball outside off a penalty corner with less than two minutes to play in the first overtime. She maneuvered around multiple players into the center of the scoring arc and fired a shot from the top that went through traffic and into the back of the cage.
Senior
Taylor Webster made three saves for the Raiders in the contest.
Shippensburg remains home this weekend and will host Mercyhurst at noon Saturday from Robb Sports Complex.
