SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team dominated play for much of Saturday afternoon, but dropped a heartbreaking overtime decision, 2-1, to Mercyhurst in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (8-4, 3-3 PSAC) scored first when sophomore
Morgan Gantz tallied her second goal of the season less than two minutes into the second half. However, Mercyhurst (5-7, 3-3) responded with a goal less than a minute later to tie the game.
The Lakers' game winner came when Andrea Goldbach scored off a rebound with 4.8 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
The Raiders were on the attack for much of regulation, and plenty of overtime as well, leading to 22 shots to Mercyhurst's four. SU held a 14-3 edge in shots on goal and had 13 corners while the Lakers took just four.
Shippensburg also had two penalty stroke opportunities. The first came in the 59th minute in which Mercyhurst goalkeeper Sam Takac made a lunging save. Takac also made a save on SU's penalty stroke chance with just less than five minutes remaining in the overtime period. Takac finished with 13 saves.
Five of Shippensburg's 13 penalty corners were taken in overtime. The Raiders forced Takac to make four saves as well in the extra session.
SU wore pink shirts during the pregame and collected donations throughout the day on its Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Proceeds were raised for the Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance.
SU is back in action Tuesday when it travels to Slippery Rock for a match beginning at 4 p.m.
