SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team clinched a berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs Saturday with a 1-0 victory over IUP at a chilly David See Field.
Shippensburg (11-6-1, 9-6-1 PSAC) is headed back to the PSAC Tournament after a one-year absence, notching the sixth seed among eight playoff teams. The Raiders will face the No. 3 seed, Slippery Rock, in the first round.
It didn't take long for SU to score as sophomore
Kat Hartner lofted what appeared to be a cross from the right side of the field in IUP territory. Instead, the kick drifted towards the goal, caught the left post and bounced in for Hartner's second goal of the season just 2:11 into the contest.
The tally was one of nine shots on goal for SU to IUP's seven. The Crimson Hawks kept sophomore goalkeeper
Kayla Kennedy alert as they totaled 19 shots. In just her second start of the season, Kennedy posted her first shutout.
Prior to the game, SU head coach
Rob Fulton was honored by Shippensburg Director of Athletics,
Jeff Michaels, for becoming the all-time winningest coach in SU Women's Soccer history earlier this season. Fulton now has 85 career wins after Saturday's victory.
SU's match with The Rock at Slippery Rock will begin at 1 p.m Tuesday. The Rock defeated SU 4-0 in the meeting between the two teams earlier this season.
