SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Ashley Weaver scored off a rebound in the 85th minute on Tuesday to allow the Shippensburg University women's soccer team to sneak past Lock Haven, 1-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match on a cold and cloudy day at David See Field.
Shippensburg (10-6-1, 8-6-1 PSAC) and Lock Haven (3-12-1, 3-11-1) traded salvos most of the day, with each team mustering multiple scoring chances throughout the contest. SU began to tilt the field in the final 15 minutes and eventually capitalized for the game's only goal.
The tally came off a splendid cross into the box from senior
Haley Jones. That cross went onto the foot of senior
Brianna Brancato, whose shot was blocked at point-blank range but trickled over to Weaver, who sent the rebound into the empty net for the game-winning goal.
SU finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots, 6-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. LHU keeper Katie Gable and SU sophomore goaltender
Leah Roy each made five saves.
The win gives SU 25 conference points, putting the Raiders in a three-way tie for sixth place in the PSAC with East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg entering Saturday's regular-season finale. The Raiders hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with both teams, having defeated both this year, but sitting right behind is California (24 points) and IUP (23 points).
SU hosts IUP on Saturday, while California hosts Lock Haven and Bloomsburg hosts Clarion. On Friday, East Stroudsburg hosts No. 1 Gannon. A loss to IUP would put the Crimson Hawks ahead of the Raiders in the standings and likely prevent SU from making the playoffs. The Top 8 teams qualify for the PSAC Tournament.
Saturday's match begins at 5 p.m. from David See Field. Before the game, the team will recognizes its seniors: Brancato,
Kaila Dautrich,
Rachel Friend, Jones and
Caitlin Sheehan.
