SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team rebounded from a halftime deficit Tuesday with two second-half goals to win its third straight game, 2-1, over Millersville at a cloudy and blustery David See Field.
Shippensburg (7-5-1, 6-5-1 PSAC) trailed 1-0 at half, but turned up the pressure in the second half. The work eventually paid off as junior
Casey Rightmyer netted her team-high fourth goal of the season to tie the game, 1-1, in the 63rd minute.
Junior
Ashley Weaver set up Rightmyer by winning a ball near midfield and advancing it to the junior forward. Rightmyer did the rest, dribbling to her right and firing a dart from outside the box to the upper-right corner of the goal.
The Raiders maintained the pressure and snapped the tie less than four minutes later. Senior
Brianna Brancato stepped to a ball near midfield and dribbled towards the Millersville box before trying to pass to junior
Sharon Juarez.
The pass to Juarez was deflected, but Millersville (4-8, 4-8) could not clear, and Juarez ended up with it in the right side of the box. She quickly shot one past Millersville goalkeeper Samantha Wolfe to give Shippensburg a lead it would not relinquish. The goal was Juarez's first of her collegiate career.
The two teams played an incredibly close game statistically as Shippensburg outshot Millersville, 16-15, but the Marauders held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Both teams took five corner kicks.
Sophomore
Leah Roy recorded her seventh win of the season by stopping seven shots.
SU will try to make it four straight wins when it travels to Clarion on Sunday for a match starting at 1 p.m.
