Women’s Basketball Pulls Away Late, Tops East Rival Millersville, 67-55

Colleen Young records career highs of 19 points, 10 rebounds; Knauer scores game-high 22 points

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Colleen Young set career highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds Saturday as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team defeated PSAC Eastern Division rival Millersville, 67-55, inside Heiges Field House.
 
The teams battled back-and-forth early in the contest as neither team led by more than five points until 7:48 remained in the first half, when SU took a 19-13 lead. The lead came in the midst of a 10-0 run for the Raiders, helping the team take a 32-26 lead into halftime.
 
Shippensburg (11-7, 7-5 PSAC) was able to pull away in the second half and led by as many as 15 points with 12:35 remaining after a 15-2 run put the Raiders up by a score of 48-33. However, Millersville (10-8, 7-6 PSAC) briefly cut the lead to just three points at 56-53 with 3:36 remaining in regulation before the Raiders responded with an 11-2 run to close out the contest.
 
Four different Raiders recorded three or more assists, as SU had assists on 16 of its 22 field goals.
 
Junior Stephanie Knauer recorded a game-high 22 points  and grabbed six rebounds while sophomore Morgan Griffith tallied 11 rebounds, six points and three assists.
 
SU held a 47-34 rebounding advantage and recorded a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the third time in its last four contests while the Marauders tallied seven assists and 16 turnovers.
 
Millersville entered the contest ranked last in the conference in free-throw percentage (56.2 percent), but the Marauders shot 19-of-27 (70.4 percent) at the charity stripe for the game. SU entered shooting 67.9 percent from the line but shot just 18-of-31 (58.1 percent).
 
Sophomore Logan Snyder tallied six points, six rebounds and two assists while sophomore Lauren Gold collected five points and four assists.
 
Freshman Vicky Tumasz hit a pair of important three-point field goals in the first half and recorded three assists.
 
Shippensburg hosts Lock Haven at 6 p.m. Wednesday inside Heiges Field House.
