BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Senior wide receiver
Trevor Harman became the all-time career receptions leader in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Saturday, but the Shippensburg University football team ultimately dropped an emotional 38-30 decision to No. 13 Bloomsburg at Redman Stadium.
Â
Shippensburg (2-2, 1-2 PSAC) took the early lead on a 22-yard field goal by senior
Michael Lloyd, SU's first field goal of the year, that capped off a 10-play, 78-yard drive.
Â
Bloomsburg (4-0, 3-0), a team that led Division II in forced turnovers entering Saturday's game, forced a fumble and recovered the loose ball for a 17-yard touchdown to take the lead. The Huskies also then benefited from a bizarre sequence at the end of the first quarter in which the play clock never ran as the game clock ticked down to zero, but a play was still run and it resulted in a 44-yard completion. Â
Â
Trailing 14-3 in the second quarter, junior quarterback
Chris Lawshe capped off a 9-play, 81-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown toss to junior
Sheldon Mayer that made the score 14-10. SU, however, would trail 28-10 at halftime.
Â
After a scoreless third quarter, Bloomsburg took a 35-17 lead by using a 49-yard pass to set up an Eddie Mateo rushing touchdown. Mateo, who entered has BU's leading rusher averaging 109 yards per game, scored three times but was held by the Red Raider defense to just 27 yards on 15 carries and a long rush of just four yards.
Â
SU continued to fight and made it a one-score game late. Mayer hauled in an acrobatic, one-handed aerial catch for an 18-yard touchdown as he was injured on the play by a Bloomsburg player who was ejected for targeting (Mayer would return to the game). The Huskies were whistled for three personal fouls on the day that resulted in injuries to Red Raiders.
Â
After a Bloomsburg field goal with 1:02 remaining, junior
Andrew Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to make the score 38-30. It was SU's first kickoff return for a touchdown since senior
Blair Brooks had an 89-yard return last year at Millersville.
Â
Harman caught nine passes for 60 yards. He was held out of the end zone for the first time in 13 games. The SU senior captain enters Week 5 with 264 career receptions, 3,731 receiving yards and 55 touchdowns. Â
Â
Lawshe completed a career-high 33 passes out of 47 attempts for 347 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 40 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked seven times on the day.
Â
Mayer led all receivers with 12 catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns. In his last two games against Bloomsburg, Mayer has totaled 18 catches for 404 yards and four touchdowns.
Â
Bloomsburg, a team that prides itself on the run, managed just 123 yards on 39 carries (3.2 yards per rush). Dai'Shon Munger was the team's leading carrier with 56 yards on 14 totes.
Â
Senior
Brian Sourber led a hard-hitting defense with 11 tackles. Sophomore
D.J. Burkey was one tackle off his career high with nine. Senior
James Brennan also had nine tackles and redshirt-freshman linebacker
Christian Brown, who made his first collegiate start, totaled a career-high seven tackles.
Â
SU hosts East Stroudsburg at noon next Saturday from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium. The first 700 fans will receive free SU sunglasses upon admission to the game.
