SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team sustained a rare regular-season overtime loss on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 1-0 decision to visiting Mansfield at David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-2-1, 1-2-1 PSAC) played in its third consecutive overtime game but came up on the short end of the decision, marking the first home loss in extra time since the final game of the 2009 season. SU was 4-0-5 in its last nine home overtime games entering Tuesday, including a victory Saturday over Kutztown.
Mansfield (1-4, 1-4) claimed the victory on a corner kick just more than one minute into overtime. Bri Carr sent a short, lofting entry toward the left side of the box that was toe-touched into the lower left corner of the net for the Mountaineer victory.
MU's Sara Weaver battled an SU defender for the ball that was directed into the goal. After post-game consultations, evidence seemed to indicate that a Mountaineer player did not re-direct the corner into the net and that it instead caromed off an SU player.
Shippensburg's two best scoring chances came during the first half. In the 14th minute, freshman
Jenny Litz fired a hard rising shot from close range that Mansfield goalkeeper Alana Greenawalt dove mid-air to deflect away. Greenawalt, who made seven saves, also turned aside a header by senior
Alyssa House off a corner in the 32nd minute.
The Raiders posted a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks. Mansfield earned its first corner with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Freshman keeper
Kayla Kennedy made two saves for Shippensburg.
It is the second straight year the two schools have played to a 1-0 decision. SU won last year at Mansfield by the same score.
SU travels to Edinboro at 5 p.m. Saturday for matchup with the Fighting Scots. The two teams met three times last year, with Edinboro claiming a 3-0 victory in the regular season before the Raiders defeated the Fighting Scots on penalty kicks in the PSAC Tournament and in regulation of the NCAA First Round.
