SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team raced out to a seven-goal lead at halftime on Tuesday and used its advantage to stave off a second-half rally by visiting Kutztown, edging the Golden Bears 10-8 in a PSAC Eastern Division matchup at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (6-4, 3-2 PSAC) led 10-2 just nine seconds into the second half and won 19 of the 20 draw controls in Tuesday's game but was kept off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

Kutztown (2-7, 0-5 PSAC), coached by three-time All-PSAC SU alum Kate Scattergood '98, scored six times in the second half and got several key stops from goaltender JoAnn McLaughlin but could not catch up to the Raiders.

Senior Bennett Widlake, junior Sheila Johnson and junior Courtney Kennedy each scored twice for the Raiders, while senior Kayla Dalzell, senior Ashley Pope, senior Amanda Krok and junior Garrie Grenfell also added tallies.

Among those benefiting from SU's dominance on the draw was senior Liz French, who led all players with five controls to go along with a caused turnover and a groundball. Widlake and Krok had four draw controls.

Pope and Grenfell each provided two assists. Freshman Annemarie Cericola had another well-rounded effort, contributing an assist, four groundballs, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Johnson and freshman Max Barkley each had multiple caused turnovers in the game.

Sophomore Ally Frymoyer came up big in the second half and finished with seven saves.

Shippensburg heads to Erie on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup at Gannon.
